DESCRIPTION:
A fascinating and enigmatic glass. On first look this glass appears to be a fairly straightforward facet stem goblet. However, closer inspection reveals a glass of some interest. The goblet’s bowl is of ogee form with straight sides engraved with swags, stars and a circle of polished ovals to the bottom of the bowl. The plain conical foot with broken pontil mark supports a facet cut stem. It is the cutting of the stem that alerts one to the interest in this glass… the facets are of an unrecorded type in being oval in shape and not touching… more like printies. Also they are quite hollow: an indication that the wheel used for cutting was quite small. Picture 6 shows the glass next to a very similar shaped glass with a plain stem, no decoration and of similar dark metal. The plain stem glass would normally be dated to about 1740 and yet the engraving style of the facet stem glass would indicate a later date of circa 1790. The engraving has many similarities with Irish glass of the latter date and perhaps this is the explanation for this unusual facet stem glass. Perhaps the glass is of Irish manufacture and highlights a degree of slightly old fashioned provincialism.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 6¾ inches;
Bowl diameter – 2⅞ inches;
Foot diameter – 3 inches.

CONDITION:
In faultless condition.

DESCRIPTION:
A well formed lead crystal English wine goblet with relatively rare ovoid bowl petal moulded to the lower half above a double series opaque twist stem made up of a 16-ply spiral band outside a pair of spiral threads stranding on a plain conical foot with broken pontil mark. You will perhaps have noticed that I have dated this glass slightly later than is usual for DSOTs which are, by convention, generally dated to around 1765 or 1770. This is because the bowl is constructed in a very similar way to Adam inspired rummers (often with lemon squeezer bases) which were made from about 1785. The particularly crisp moulding along with a fairly thick bowl suggest that the glass was made at a similar time as these early rummers.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 6¼ inches;
Bowl diameter –3⅛ inches;
Foot diameter – 3¼ inches.

CONDITION:
Excellent condition with the expected wear to bowl rim and bearing surface of the foot.

DESCRIPTION:
An unusually well proportioned early 18th century baluster wine glass with a solid based bell bowl above a baluster stem made up of a medial triple annulated knop and a basal knop standing on a conical folded foot. A lovely solid glass made from gloriously oily looking and feeling lead metal.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 6¼ inches;
Bowl diameter – 2⅞ inches;
Foot diameter – 3⅛ inches.

CONDITION:
Apart from two insignificant, shallow scratches (see photo 3 at 3 o'clock) this glass is in excellent condition with fairly light wear to the bearing surface of the foot.

£2,750

DESCRIPTION:
A Georgian colour twist wine glass with bell bowl above double knopped colour twist stem composed of an inner white gauze surrounded by three spiral tapes in red, green and blue, the red tape being backed with an opaque white tape, all standing on a plain conical foot. A frequent question often asked is, “Why are colour twist glasses so rare?” It is often thought that it is because they were more difficult to make. However, in fact they were no more difficult to make than white opaque twist stems. It would seem that their rarity is more likely to do with their perceived garish vulgarity at a time when refined classical taste was at its apex.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 6⅛ inches;
Bowl diameter – 2⅜ inches;
Foot diameter – just under 3 inches.

CONDITION:
In fine fettle with no condition issues.

DESCRIPTION:
A large and substantial tumbler wheel engraved with a sunflower (with polished petals), foliage and a jaybird or ho-ho bird. The bottom of the glass has a rough snapped pontil mark. The sunflower and jaybird motifs are relatively common on 18th century engraved glass, but, in spite of that, their symbolic meaning remains obscure... symbols of good luck perhaps? We would be interested to hear from anyone who has a better explanation.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – Just over 5 inches;
Bowl diameter – 4 inches;
Foot diameter – 3 inches;
Capacity – 1 imperial pint.

CONDITION:
In good condition with a couple of unburst air inclusion in the base. There is a fair amount of wear to the bowl rim and bearing surface of the foot all consistent with regular use over the last 250 years.

DESCRIPTION:
A Georgian lead crystal firing dram glass with ogee bowl engraved with fruiting vine above an opaque twist stem with an interesting configuration. The outer twist is a pair of spiral tapes inside of which is a lace twist. However, inside this appears to be another pair of spiral tapes. Is this perhaps a rare triple series? The glass stands on a terraced firing foot. The glass is priced with no premium with regard to the triple series speculation.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 4¾ inches;
Bowl diameter – 1⅞ inches;
Foot diameter – just over 2¾ inches.

CONDITION:
The glass is in excellent original condition with the expected patterns of wear to the foot and bowl rim.

Please ask if extra photographs are required.

£410

DESCRIPTION:
A rather refined Georgian lead crystal wine glass with large round funnel bowl flute moulded to the lower half above a multi-spiral air twist stem with an inverted baluster shoulder knop all standing on plain conical foot. This really is a most delightful and charming glass. The photographs unfortunately fail to fully represent the beautiful unctuous metal or the way the trapped air in the stem sparkles in the light.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 6¾ inches;
Bowl diameter – 2⅞ inches;
Foot diameter – 2¾ inches.

CONDITION:
Good original condition with a small (1.5 mm) and unobtrusive white inclusion one third of the way up the bowl. There are the expected patterns of wear to the foot and bowl rim.

DESCRIPTION:
A handsome Georgian lead crystal wine glass with a bell bowl with a multi-spiral air twist stem with applied bladed knop standing on a plain conical foot. This glass is constructed from beautifully clear and bright metal. This form of glass with bell bowl and MSAT stem with applied collar is not that unusual. The collars come in a variety of forms, the most frequent being a vermiform collar. However, Barrington Haynes in Glass Through the Ages describes bladed collars as, “Much rarer.”

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 6¾ inches;
Bowl diameter – 2⅝ inches;
Foot diameter – 2⅞ inches.

CONDITION:
Good original condition with the expected patterns of wear to the foot and bowl rim.
