Sorry - this item now SOLD

DESCRIPTION:
“Dwarf” ale glasses are so named not because they were used for a diminutive form of ale but because they had short, or as in this case, no stem. This fine example has a conical wrythen bowl with a flammiform fringe standing on a plain conical foot with broken pontil mark. There are two insignificant air inclusions, one each in the bowl and foot and foot has some chill marks to the underside. The glass is a lovely dark bluish grey tint indicative of an early date which may well be a bit earlier than that indicated above.

DIMENSIONS:
Height – 4 1/8 inches;
Bowl diameter – 2 1/8 inches;
Foot diameter – 2 1/4 inches.

CONDITION:
This glass is offered in excellent, original condition and shows normal patterns of wear to bowl rim and the underside of the foot.

DESCRIPTION: A fine example of an English Georgian sweetmeat glass constructed of lead/flint glass. The double ogee bowl is panel moulded with an everted rim above two collars. The stem is a teared six-sided moulded pedestal stem with round shoulders and basal collaring standing on a moulded and domed folded foot. Bearing in mind the skill that goes into making this type of sweetmeat glass it is amazing that, compared to similarly constructed drinking glasses, they are relatively only a fraction of the cost... one of the unexplainable aberrations of the antique glass trade. DIMENSIONS: The glass is 6" tall,the bowl 4" and the foot 3 1/4". CONDITION: There are no condition issues.

A substantial and well-made Georgian wine glass with a bell bowl set on a double series opaque twist comprised of a multi-ply corkscrew inside a pair of corkscrew twists set on a plain conical foot. A charming feature of the twist is that there is an air "chaser" running alongside the inside edge of one of the corkscrew twists which catches the light every so often. The glass stands 6 3/4 inches tall with a bowl diameter of 2 7/8 inches and 3-inch foot. There is one minor frit and a couple of small soot inclusions in the foot. There is light age related wear to the foot and overall the glass is in good condition.

Bickerton illustrates a similar wine glass in his book, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses, on page 206 fig. 603 and classifies the stem as a single series opaque twist. However, it can be argued this classification is erroneous and that the glass should be considered as being a mixed twist. The glass offered here is in some ways superior to the one illustrated by Bickerton in that this glass has a rib moulded round funnel bowl as oppposed to the rather austere plain ogee bowl in Bickerton's example. The stem is made up of an elongated tear which interestingly and confusingly reflects the surrounding four spiral tapes to make the stem look more complex than it actually is. The foot is of the plain conical form. The glass measures 14 cm tall, 4.9 cm across the bowl and the foot 6.9 cm. The glass is in fine condition with normal age related wear to the bowl and foot rims. It should be mentioned that there is a small "seed" in the bowl which can be seen in picture two.
