Famille Rose - Rose Canton Vases in Miniature

Pair of miniature vases in double gourd shape, decorated in famille rose enamels. These vases were made in Jingdezhen, the porcelain center in China, and the fired blanks were sent to Canton to be decorated. Rose pink roses and lotus flowers, colorful birds, phoenixes, butterflies were the dominate art motifs. Not only does the double gourd shape is an interesting form, but it also symbolizes the emblem of riches. It is also the emblem of one of the Eight Immortals Li Tiegui.

The porcelain paste is a little heavy. The open mouth is ringed in gold gilt paint. There is a .2cm of exposure on the foot, for the ease of firing. The foot is a little gritty.

Date: ca. 1850's to 1899's

Condtion: good condition, with no cracks, the paste is clean, without black spots.

Dimensions: 7cm high, 4.5cm in diameter

Collectors of miniatures, this pair is for you. Collecting miniatures is a pastime for Chinese connoisseurs through the history of collecting art in China. Personally a miniature has all the essence of its full size twin, but it takes up only a fraction of the space. It looks small, but the technique of its making is just as difficult if not more, due to its diminutive size. Collecting miniatures is not for everyone, but it takes that person who truly understands the techniques involved and find them more endearing than their relatives in full size.
