$4800.00

In an unusually fine state of preservation, this finely detailed sculpture is in the Sino-Tibetan tradition, revealing the Buddha seated in meditation (dhyanasana) on a double-lotus plinth with his hands in the dhyanamudra gesture and holding the image of a crenelated pagoda. In courtly attire, wholly covered in foliate scroll-work and having figures of the Buddha in the pose of teaching on the front as a pectoral and on the back two images of the Buddha with hands in the gesture of peace (ahhay ...click for details

Elaborately repousseed chased and engraved, this charming and practical hand warmer once lay concealed in the long sleeves of a rich Chinese, a comfort in the long, cold months. Deftly disguising the necessary reticulations, a host of very finely detailed birds, foliage and flowers form a harmonious design that covers the sides and top. At some time, maybe originally, the piece was entirely silvered, but almost all of that enrichment has disappeared from the outer surfaces, leaving nicely pati ...click for details

This is one of two antique buckles that were custom mounted in Hong Kong for a famous Hollywood director many years ago. (The other is offered at Trocadero #13690.) Here, a superb gilt-bronze ornament has been fitted onto a verdigris copper box whose dark-green surface mimics the effect of rich silk or spinach jade. The buckle is not soldered in and can be easily removed, if so desired. Lined in dark rosewood, the box measures approximately 6-3/4 inches by 3-3/4 inches by 2-1/4 inches high. $275

An excellent example of a ancient Chinese burial bronze in the form of a lid for a food container. (The vessels were generally of much lighter construction and do not survive the centuries of burial. Even when found intact, the bases rarely match well with the lids.) This piece dates from the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. to 220 A.D.) and exemplifies the fineness of that period's metalworking. Alternating concave and convex borders lead up to a crown engraved with stylized designs and a pierced fi ...click for details
