Carved in precious jade to imitate an almost-unattainable early Chinese bronze ho (covered tripod pot), this fine detailed piece is supported on three elephant-head legs. The grayish green of the jade suggests the color of ancient bronze, with the dark-ivory striations giving the effect of natural burial incrustation. Very dramatically carved into rare huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera) wood is a craggy mountain with bamboo trees. The upper rim has encircling ridges to emphasize the brush-pot’s well-like structure. Chinese, Ming Dynasty, approximately 4-1/2 inches at the widest and 7-3/4 inches tall.

A lush setting of a bamboo glade with cranes and lotuses, rocks and a pine tree, with an island bearing weeping willow trees, are all carved in bold relief on this very elegant brush-pot in rare zitan (Pterocarpus santalinus) wood. Simple rims define the top and bottom, the latter with three shallow feet. The core at the base has been fitted with a plug of another wood. Chinese, late Ming Dynasty, approximately 6-3/8 at the widest diameter and 6-5/8 inches high.
