This graceful vase has some defects that are displayed in the pictures, but the overall effect of its subtle form and glaze is very winning. A fine example of this sophisticated era of Chinese art, it measures about 8-1/2 inches tall and 5-1/2 inches in diameter.

From the sublimely simple: an opium pipe quickly hacked out of the right growth of bamboo -- termed a "bang" -- to its elegant imitation in "Souchou jade," serpentine that has much the same look as fine jadeite. Probably dating from the last years of the Eighteenth Century to the early years of the Nineteenth, his pipe has survived in superb condition, despite the evidence of much use. This exceptional pair of figures depicts the Buddhist lions (shishi or foo dogs) that represent the male and female principle of balance. In exceptionally hard black granite they are carved in fine detail, he with the brocade ball beneath his front paw, she with a puppy beneath hers. Similar pieces from the treasure junk Tek Sing are being auctioned right now. Chinese, late Eighteenth to early Nineteenth Centuries. Approximately 5-1/4 inches tall by 4-1/2 inches long by 3 inches broad.
