An elaborate design of a fan, a banner, a saki keg, etc., floating in swirling seaweed and Buddhist symbols covers the sides of this dramatic hibachi, or Japanese brazier. The top bears an equally elaborate design of ho-o birds and flowering kiri (paulonia) branches, symbols of the female principle and the Empress. This a beautifully designed bowl that features a central roundel of a ladies tending to the cocoons of silkworms after they have been treated for unwinding. Behind the scene are arranged two overlapping squares rather like piece of silk, one gold with cranes flying over the sea, the other a diaper pattern of deep green and red emamel, both bordered with enamel black.
