A particularly fine example of stippled painting is displayed under glass on the top of this simple boxwood snuff box: an Alpine beauty is portrayed in her native costume, a striped blue apron over her red dress, a brown cape, her hair bound up in a black bandeau with a toss of red ribbons on top. The details are almost microscopic! Measuring 1-5/8 inches in diameter and one inch high, the piece is in superb condition and was probably made in Switzerland or the Tyrol in the second quarter of t ...click for details

PLEASE INQUIRE

“He is covered with stars, ribbons and medals, more like a Prince of the Opera than the Conqueror of the Nile. It is really melancholy to see a brave and good man, who has deserved well of his country, cutting so pitiful a figure.” This was written by General Sir John Moore upon receiving this painting of his friend and fellow defender of England, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. He had ordered the tondo version from Leonardo Guzzardi, painter of the full-length one now in London’s National Port ...click for details

$4200.00

“Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that this German High Renaissance figure of an archangel originally must have held a music book in his missing hands. Even in its deteriorated state, there is a magnificence to the statue’s graceful, liquid form, and fortunately, there is no damage to the carving of the handsome, beatific face. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy old marble base. It is in healthy co ...click for details
