Serene in meditation, Buddha sits upon a high-relief lotus with petals glazed in the prussian blue that is one of the signature colors of Kutani porcelain. Buddha’s elegant black robe is decorated in a lustrous black glaze that imitates fine brocade by its contrasting matte and gloss finishes. Repeated polychrome roundels of the wisteria mon (badge) brighten the robe. Japanese, Taisho Era, late Nineteenth to early Twentieth Centuries. Alive with bold designs of flower-filled jardinieres and tall stands earing incense burners, this deep bowl is enameled in red and green on underglaze blue, with highlingts of gilding. There is central design of bamboo surrounded by borders; the outer side show a dragon with two pheonixes flying among flames. Below, there is a stylized cloud band above a foot decorated with noughts and crosses. Japanese, late Nineteenth Century, 7-1/2 inches in diameter and three inches high. Mint condition.

This attractive tobacco bottle from French Camaroon, circa 1920, is carved from fine boxwood with the likeness if a Legioniaire in his visored cap, which still bears much of its ebonizing. The bottle opens with a simple screw-cap, and a boxwood spoon is attached by a leather thong through the figure’s neck. Around 5-1/2 inches tall and 1-1/4 inches wide.

This is a superb example of bamboo work: a food container from Mindanao Island, Philippine Archipelago. The central body is strengthened by bands of woven rattan that are, in turn, supplemented by finer-woven band forming supports, an elaborate handle and an implement holder. Probably early Twentieth Century, approximately 12-1/2 inches tall by five inches in diameter. A beautiful addition to any collection of Oceanic art.

A product of Palawan Island, Philippine Archepelago, this finely crafted blowgun quiver was collected by noted anthropologist Henry Otley Beyer in his study of native Philippine ethnic culture. With its body formed of bamboo sections, a long wooden hook serves to attach the quiver to the hunter’s sash and also provides a firm closure for the top. Almost French in feeling is this fine Japanese silver cloisonné box of a simple domed round form. Gaily strewn with flowers on a white ground, and plainly backed in black enamel, it measures approximately 2-1/2 inches high and 4-1/2 inches in diameter. There is very tiny fleabite chip on the edge of the top, but you really have to look for it. Early Twentieth Century.
