Cuisine Landmark: Larousse Gastronomique

If you saw the delightful film "Julie and Julia" you will recall the showing of this bible of French cookery, as great an event as Julia Child's epic "Master the Art of French Cooking" many years later. This landmark tome became and has remained the main reference for professionals and skilled amateurs in the field. This example is in excellent condition and was the proud possession of Jeanette, personal cook to Margaret Curtis (opera star Marguerite Valdi.) The book has been come through many editions and translations, but none as glorious as this 1938 first edition. Aside from the invaluable information, there are the numerous -- and sometimes quaint -- illustrations, both in black-and-white and in fine-quality color rotogravure. (Note the typical haute-bourgoise kitchen and the Jean Harlow wannabe noshing on corn-on-the-cob!)
