| Painting of a beautiful young woman by Francis Wheatley, English (1741 or 47 to 1801), creator of the famous "Cries of London" series, this oil on canvas depicts a lady with high-piled powdered hair wearing a white muslin day dress trimmed in blue and seated in a blue-and-white painted Louis XV chair. She smiles rather wistfully at the viewer and holds a shuttle delicately in her right hand, her only ornament a blue ribbon around her throat. The repeated blue -- color-motif of the Bourbons -- in the picture and the French style of the lady's dress and hair indicate Royalist sympathies: a French aristocrat in exile? Circa 1785, original gilt tondo frame. Purchased from the estate of Lolita Armour, it retains the label of Arthur Ackermann & Son of Chicago, London and Paris. The painting is in excellent condition. Image is approximately 14 by 12 inches; frame approximately 20 by 17-1/2 inches. | |||||||
