Important Portrait of Admiral Nelson
$18,500.00 (Temporarily Lowered Price)

“He is covered with stars, ribbons and medals, more like a Prince of the Opera than the Conqueror of the Nile. It is really melancholy to see a brave and good man, who has deserved well of his country, cutting so pitiful a figure.” This was written by General Sir John Moore upon receiving this painting of his friend and fellow defender of England, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. He had ordered the tondo version from Leonardo Guzzardi, painter of the full-length one now in London’s National Portrait Gallery. (I wonder if Sir John ever saw the diamond cockade in Nelson’s hat in action? It was presented to the hero after the Nile victory by an Egyptian caliph and featured a clockwork mechanism that caused the central rosette to spin!) The oil-on-canvas is in excellent condition and measures 27 inches by 22-1/2 inches; it retains its original gilt fillet frame. Ex. Coll. George M Juergens, New York City, who purchased it some forty years ago in London from the sale of items belonging to Sir John Moore.
