Rare and early Satsuma ewer by Seikozan
This is one of the earliest examples of Seikozan that we have seen and also the largest ewer we have seen bearing his signature, measuring 11" x 8.5". The form is most elegant with sculpted tassels forming the handle. The scene depicts mothers teaching their sons calligraphy bordered by geometric reserves and a band of butterflies above. The underside is signed Seikozan with an illegible impressed mark. The oval shape of the impressed mark was often used by Taizan, a historically important studio. This item dates about 1875 - 1885.
