This rare ivory carving of an empress with her attendant is a late 19th century product. It is 9” high (with a fitted hardwood carved base, it is 10 ½” high), 2 ¾” wide and 2 1/8” deep (both measured from bottom). This image depicts a story told in traditional Chinese opera and classical literature about a beautiful young noble woman, Yang YuHuan (楊 玉 環) who lived from 719 to 756 A. D. This superb ivory carving of an aristocratic young woman holding a child is a mid or late Meiji period (1868~1911) product. The woman is formally dressed in a kimono decorated with patterns and floral designs. Her hair is elaborately coiffed. She holds a boy in her left arm and a parasol in her right hand. The child is holding a branch of chrysanthemum. The piece is very well executed and stands 10 ¼” high, 4” wide and 3 1/8” thick (measured from the bottom). This rare tortoise shell carved RuYi (scepter) is a mid-19th century product. It is 13 ½” long and 3 1/2” wide from the widest part (head of the scepter). There are fourteen cranes carved in relief flying in coiled lucky clouds. The pattern repeats and covers the entire handle and head. It is in excellent condition. More photos are available.

This cast bronze incense burner is an early 20th century product. It is 6 ½” high (with carved hardwood base is 9 ¾” high) and 9 ¼” in diameter. Two bands of archaistic designs surround the upper half of the body. The lower half contains four floral designs which are repeated in relief on the cover of the vessel. It is in great condition.

This very well carved Chinese export ivory jewelry box is a mid or late 19th century product. Three dragons surrounded by lucky clouds are carved into the top of the box. Two dragons appear on the front of the box and one on the rear. There is a mirror and removable tray inside the jewelry box. The tray and bottom of the box are lined with dark blue velvet. This very well carved Japanese ivory okimono is a late 19th century product. It is 5 1/2” high, 2 3/4” wide and 2 1/4″ thick measured from the bottom. It depicts a smiling farmer holding a bundle of fresh cut lotus roots which are wrapped and bound in a straw sheet. The facial expression is very realistic. The short robe with willow tree design indicates it is either spring or summer which is the right season for harvesting lotus roots. The artist name “Furuyama” is on the bottom. This very well carved ivory statue of a scholar is a late 19th century product. It is 11" high (with hardwood carved base, it is 13" high), 3 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" thick. The image is the well-known Song Dynasty (960AD~1270AD) hermit scholar Lin Pu (林 逋). Li Pu (967AD~1028AD) was born in Hang Zhou City, Zhe Jiang. When he was young he traveled a lot.
