This pair of carved ivory seals is an early 20th century product. They are 1 7/16” high and 1” square. They are carved as a pair of reclining lions (or Foo dogs) holding globes. Seals such as these are called “phrase seals.” Usually seals are for names, dates, collections or phrases; phrase seals are the most interesting. The four characters on one seal reads “Resting on a couch, (I am) watching the cloud.” The other one reads “Leaning on the window, (I am) listening to the rain drops.” ...click for details

This rare and unusual ivory carving of a sage is an early 20th century product. It is 10” high (with fitted hard wood base, it is 11” high), 3 ½” wide and 3” thick both measured from bottom. This image is the great Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist Li Shi-Zhen (李 時 珍, 1518~1593). Li Shi-Zhen is considered to be one of the greatest naturalists in China. This early 20th century ivory carving of a maiden is 15 7/8” high (17 ½” with base), 3 ½” wide and 2 7/8” thick. She wears a simple and elegant robe and holds a bouquet of flowers in front of her. The carving is superb and has nice patina. The wood base is a later made piece. Aside from some small hair line cracks due to its age, the statue is in great condition. This superb ivory carving of Guan Yin is an early 20th century product. It is 12 ¼” high (wood base is not included), 2 ¾” wide (from bottom) and 2 1/8” thick (from bottom). It depicts Guan Yin (goddess of mercy) holding a young child. The laughing child carries a lotus blossom and leaf. This finely carved noble lady is a mid or late 19th century product. It is 12” high, 2 ¾” wide and 2 3/8” thick. There is an honorable “Yong Zheng” mark on the bottom. The lady is holding a bunch of lily blossoms in her left hand and a basket of peony blossoms in her right hand. The statue has great patina. Aside from some loss of coloring and a small old repair to a broken tassel on the front of her robe, it is in excellent condition.

This pair of carved ivory emperor and empress are late 19th or early 20th century export pieces. The emperor is 12 ¼” high, 2 ¼” wide and 1 ¾” thick. The empress is 12 1/8” high, 2 ½” wide and 2” thick. The emperor is holding a sword and the empress is holding a Ruyi. The robes are very well carved with dragon and phoenix designs. There is honorable “Great Ming” mark on the bottom of the empress. They are in excellent condition.
