This late 19th century Chinese bamboo brush holder (Bitong) is 12 inches tall and 5 inches at its widest part. It was carved in high relief and lacquered. The top part of the cylinder presents the story of the seven immortals of the bamboo grove. Four immortals are looking at a scroll picture; two are playing ¡°Go¡± and one is watching them play. The thin man has a curly beard, one foot bare, the other wearing a sandal; his robe is open to expose his bare chest with ribs showing. Carved black wood base.
