This black Bizen chawan (tea bowl) is from one of the last firings by the late Bizen master potter Masamune Moriyasu, also known as Satoru. As with the Nakamura family, he was a potter of traditional wares and was very highly thought of in Japan. This chawan is a fine example. It has a fine surface with some ash deposits. The artist’s signature is on the top of the original wood box and his mark is on the bottom of the chawan. It is 2 ¾” high and 5 ¾” wide. It is in excellent condition.

This is a fine quality Madara style Karatsu chawan (tea bowl) in the Japanese taste by one of the finest late 20th century Karatsu potters working in Japan, Nakagawa Jinembo (1953~2011). A very fine jomon-zogan (cord impressed design) small bowl (ko-bachi) with overglaze enamel designs was made by the late LNT Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919-2007). Shimaoka’s use of this design is a major factor to his designation as a Japanese Living National Treasure. It could also be used as a small chawan (tea bowl), but wasn't made as one. It is 3” high and 5 ¼” in diameter. The artist’s signature is on the bottom. It is in excellent condition.
