This finely decorated porcelain yunomi (tea cup) in the Arita style depicts two men fishing in a boat. It was made by a potter with the family name of Yasukazi. Not much else is known about him. The piece came from the collection of a noted Japanese chajin (tea man) named Hatayama, who himself is known for the quality of the tea scoops that he makes for chanoyu. This finely fired Nanban Karatsu guinomi (sake cup) was made by the thirteenth generation potter Nakazato Takashi (1937~), son of Living National Treasure Nakazato Muon. It is typified by the orange body color and light ash deposits which Takashi developed and bears a resemblance to some Bizen firings. This early guinomi (sake cup) in the Shigaraki style with fine clay flavor was made by Tsujimura Kai (1976~). Kai is the son of the famous, some say notorious, Tsujimura Shiro, one of the master clay artists currently working in Japan. Kai has mastered Shigaraki, Iga, Karatsu and Kohiki styles. The cup is 2 ¼” high and 2 ½” wide. The artist’s signature is on the top of the original wood box and his mark is on the bottom of the sake cup. It is in excellent condition.

This nicely formed guinomi (sake cup) with an unusual Shino firing was made by noted restaurateur and ceramic artist Hamanaka Gesson (1943~). His work is blending of his native Hagi ware with other styles and glazes not seen in Hagi before. He is very popular and collected artist in Japan. This cup fits in the hand well. It is 2 ½” high and 2 ¾” wide. The artist’s signature is on the top of the original wood box. It is in excellent condition.

This hardwood carved cup is 4 ¾” high, 4 ½” wide, 3 1/8” thick (from the top) and 2” thick (from the bottom). It is an early 20th century product. It depicts three sages surrounded by a mountain scene. One sage and his young servant are walking on a rocky trail; one sage is crossing a wood bridge all by himself; the last sage is riding on a donkey with his servant in front of him. This dark blue to black guinomi (sake cup) with soft silky surface was made by Kako Katsumi (1965~. He came from a family of commercial potters from Kyoto; but, at an early age, decided to become an art potter. He is highly thought of by a number of Japanese ceramic art critics and has won the grand prize at the prestigious Tea Forms Exhibition in Japan. The cup is 2 ¾” high and 2 ¾” wide. The artist’s signature is on the top of the original wood box. It is in excellent condition.
