This black Bizen chawan (tea bowl) is from one of the last firings by the late Bizen master potter Masamune Moriyasu, also known as Satoru. As with the Nakamura family, he was a potter of traditional wares and was very highly thought of in Japan. This chawan is a fine example. It has a fine surface with some ash deposits. The artist’s signature is on the top of the original wood box and his mark is on the bottom of the chawan. It is 2 ¾” high and 5 ¾” wide. It is in excellent condition.

This very nice small iron glazed vase with polychrome over glaze decoration was made by Hamada Tomoo, grandson of Living National Treasure Hamada Shoji, the most famous Japanese potter of the 20th century. Tomoo has worked to revitalize the Mashiko pottery tradition with newer, more original works such as this vase. It is 5 ¾” high and 3 ¾” wide from the bottom. The artist’s signature is inside of the original wood box. It is in excellent condition.

This very finely potted and fired brown Nezumi Shino guinomi (sake cup) was made by one of the finest Shino style potters in Japan today, Sakai Kobu. Sakai has been designated a Toki City Intangible Cultural Property (local level award similar to the national Living National Treasure designation). Capetta has developed work in the Japanese style and has been in a group exhibit in Italy with noted American ceramic artist Jeff Shapiro. It is 2 ¼” high and 2 ¼” in diameter. This lovely chawan (tea bowl) shaped, carved guinomi (sake cup) was made by noted and highly awarded Japanese ceramic artist Ichino Masahiko (1961~) who works out of the Tamba area. It is 1 ½” high and 2 ½” in diameter. There is an artist’s signature on the bottom. It is in excellent condition.
