This very well carved late Meiji Period (1868~1911) ivory tusk is 14” high (with wood base is 15” high), 4 ½” wide and 4” thick. The carving on one side depicts a castle located in front of a snowy mountain surrounded by rockery and trees. A water fall serves as an entry into a quite village. Two straw roof houses are placed along a busy pass. There are seven pedestrians walking on the pass; two young women, a mother with her child, one man carrying boxes, two men walking and one person riding a donkey. The other side of the tusk was carved with iris blossoms and leaves. The entire piece seems to carry the spirit of the floating world depicted in wood block prints. The technique is just simple and smooth; and the design is elegant and fulfilled. There is a carved red seal on the side which reads ”Takanoko”. Aside from a few crack lines due to the size of the tusk and its age, it is in excellent condition.
