| This nice horn carving of a vase (or cup) is 4 5/8” high, 2 ¾” wide and 1 ¾” thick. It depicts the theme of “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove”, Chinese name Zhu Lin Qi Xian (竹 林 七 贤). As is traditionally depicted, the group of seven scholars, musicians and sages wished to escape the intrigues, corruption and stifling atmosphere of the court life during the political chaos of the Three Kingdoms period (220 AD~265 AD). They gathered in a bamboo grove near the house of Ji Kang ( 嵇康, 223–262) who acted as the leader of this group. They enjoyed and praised art, poetry, music and Taoist-oriented Qingtan ( 清談, pure conversation) in their works and their simple, rustic life. The carving is superb and well polished. There is an honorific “Qian Long” date mark on the bottom; but it is an early 20th or mid 20th century product. It is in excellent condition. | ||
