Classic shape in this lovely Bristol, England art glass vase dramatically handpainted with vermillion fuschias, and accent leaves in green and blue. Painted on front and verso, and accented with gilt. Rim at opening, shoulder, lower knop, and foot are lined in yellow enamel. 8.25" (20.95 cm) tall, 2.375" (6.03 cm) diameter rim and base; clipped pontil. Covered Blown glass tankard, or stein, with thick, applied handle, pewter hinge which appears to be hand-forged, extended horsehead decoration. Commemorative message on beveled glass lid inset which reads in script, "Ch. Fennel 12/7 79." The engraved initials, "F. L." appear on the reverse of the glass, under the horse. Precious pair of English Mouthblown Art Glass Vases, attributed to Stevens & Williams, Stourbridge, England, blue cased rims and neck, over creamy white glass which appears custard-yellow in some lighting. The thorned handles have an opalescent fire when held to the light. Some of the raised gilding remains on the front floral pattern, but most of the gilding has worn away, revealing the still attractive under-enamel in an amethyst color. James Powell Opalescent Venetian Revival 19th Century mouthblown, art glass compote, tazza. Ribbons of blue-green opalescence swirl in one effort, from the base, all the way to the tip of the outer ruffle where it becomes a 1-inch concentrated border.
