Wood Box Handpainted in Dutch floral, Tole style, on lid and all four sides; beautifully carved feet, and serpentine shape of box. 7.75" x 5.5" x 2.5" (19.68 x 13.97 x 6.35 cm). Scattered wear scratches to the lid painting, and through the gilding to the gesso; paper-velvet lining has a tear, right side near back. Unmarked, although we believe it to have been made in Italy, perhaps Florence. c. 1940. $10 US Shipping.

American handmade, handpainted naive, folk pine box. Cherry red ground with blue and white painted sailing ship flying an American stars and stripes flag on lid; anchor and snake on face of box. Brass hinges; marks on the sides where handles were once affixed. 12.50" wide, 6.25" deep, 5.75" tall (31.75 x 15.87 x 14.60 cm). The lid shows notes indicating that the box was used in the 1960s as a Christmas Bazaar cash box, although we believe the box, itself, dates to the 1940s. ...click for details

Early 20th Century Florence, Italy, Pietra dura (inlay of hardstones) with a ground of black slate, an exquisite bird made of lapis lazuli, malachite, quartz, granite, and others. Light wood box is covered in mottled green leather, embossed with gold, brass hinge.
