Original Hudson River School Pastel by John Reuben Bacon (1866 - )American, showing an apricot moon and moon slick on water, between two amazingly poetic trees. Signed twice, lower right, "J.R. Bacon." Wonderful 19th Century gilded frame, most likely original to the piece, and likely the original (or certainly very old) glass. Bacon's works are seldom on the market. circa 1886-1910.

Who Was Who in American Art, 1999, has this to say about the artist: John Reuben Bacon, born 1866 in Tarrytown, NY. Studied with William M. Chase. Member of the New York Society of Craftsmen, Glouster Society of Artists, Hudson Valley Art Association, Deerfield Valley Art Society. Author of a book on blockprinting. Contributor to the NY TImes, Brooklyn Eagle, and other publications.

Size: 26.5" x 17", framed to 35.5" x 26" x 1.75"

Condition: Not examined out of frame; appears to be old moisture spots on lower left, and a few near the signatures, a simple repair by a professional; otherwise excellent; Frame in very fine condition with minor age cracking, minor gesso losses, and darkened patina.
