Rare 19th C Venetian Murano Portrait Mosaic Glass Vial
Although quite rare, this piece has sustained considerable damage, as if from a fall onto a hard surface. The damage includes....
....A continuous crack all the way down one side, across the base, up the other side, and over the top--in other words, all the way around the vial. However, it does not appear that the vial actually came apart. It does appear to be quite stable, and intact. The crack apparently only went through the first layers of the glass. This piece is quite thick and heavy for its size, the reason, presumably for it surviving the blow which caused this. It can be seen in the photos on one side where it actually cuts through one of the portrait canes--a central upside-down portrait.
....At the base of the vial, on the same line as the upside-down portrait cane, is a chip about 3/16-inch tall and extending to about another 3/16-inch to its left on the base edge -- sort of a backward "L".
....Near the base, on the opposite side, there is another chip about 2/16-inch long by 1/16-inch wide; and another about 3/8-inch upward from there, which measures only about 1/16 x 1/16-inch square.
....There is one more small chip on one of the edges about 1/2" from the base, which measures about 1/16" diameter. Any remaining depressions and/or irregularities, are burst bubbles or other, and are original to manufacture.

All of that having been said, the detailed description of this fabulous piece of 19th Century glass follows...

The vial measures 2.25" tall, .75" x .50" at the base, 1.125" x .75" at the shoulders, and .50" outside rim of the opening. The overall shape is hexagonal, with three planes on one side, and three on the other; the rim and opening are irregularly round. The base glass is opaque obsidian, or black, with an overlay of numerous "waves" of opaque aquamarine, turquoise, cobalt, amber and milky lattimo, white; another transparent layer of clear with profuse gold dust, and now and then, a daub of tranparent cranberry which causes the gold dust to appear as metallic ruby dust....exquisite!

The Portrait Canes, themselves, are wonderful -- five distinct gentlemen, expertly created in glass. Identiry of the portraits is not known, but they are likely well-known figures of the 19th Century; perhaps even portraits of the master blowers, themselves.

Portrait Cane Glass of this nature and age are very rare. Priced in accordance with damage. c. 1890. $14 US Shipping.
