| Pieces by Charles Martin (CM), are seldom seen, much less in such extravagant gold. Charles rare Martin, plats antiques de porcelaine de Limoges avec la dorure. Those pieces that come along are known to have much gold on them, although this acid-etched, two-tone, gold-on-gold design is unusual and heavy, and covers the full rim, 1.75" (4.44 cm). The pattern emphasizes two different styles of the fleur d'lis, along with a unique leaf-and-scroll pattern; each plate is 10.25" (26.03 cm) diameter. Three marks are on each plate, the green underglaze whiteware mark of a bird flying between two banners, and "Limoges, France;" the Blue overglaze Martin triangle signature of "Limoges, France, Decor," and the "CM" initials in script in the center; lastly, the American importer, "Marshall Field & Co., Chicago." Fields was in business as early as 1852, although this particular name was not used until 1881. As happens, the landmark Chicago store was acquired and renamed "Macy's," in 2006. Charles Martin company is known to have existed from the 1880s until the 1930s. These marks are thought to have been used between 1900-1930s. With some rubbing to the gold, mostly around the outermost edges, and virtually no wear at all to the well, we consider these plates to be in excellent condition. c. 1900. $35 US Shipping. | |||||||||
