| 19th Century Italian Pietra Dura, Gypsy Woman made from hardstone mosaic, set into natural slate, mounted in antique frame. Note on verso (in two places) states: "Restored November 1955 by Virginia Brewer." We have examined the stone closely, and believe the restoration was the bright red on the sleeves of the blouse, the matching red of the necklace, all of which are enameled. Also, it appears the eye stones may have been lost, and replaced with enamel. There is also the evidence of the finish of the slate surrounding the mosaic. It is perfectly smooth, and may have been originally created by the artist as a type of background; or it could have been some sort of damage. The answer is not clear. 9.5" x 5" (24.13 x 12.7 cm), framed to 11.75" x 7.25" x .50" (29.84 x 18.41 x 1.27 cm). We have not examined it without the backing. A special item with many different semi-precious stones cut to form a lovely pietra dura, created by a master craftsman. c. 1880-1900. $20 US Shipping. | |||||||||
