19th 20th C Turkish Ottoman Empire Sterling Silver Cup
Hand-tooled, chased, engraved heavy cup with matching rolled rim lid, folded rim foot, ornate handle which may be a later replacement (see photos); avian finial, with an extension fitting through to the underside of the lid, and would normally screw tight under the lid; the nut is also silver. With the exception of the handle, the piece appears to have been created and decorated entirely by hand. The Mark on the finial's tail is that Turkish mark in use generally during the late 19th Century, through the date of 1923 and is the Tughra Mark of the Sultan. A perfectly matching hallmark has been stamped into the lid. Alongside the Ottoman mark on the lid is the smaller Turkish hallmark which indicates a fineness of .800 to .900 Sterling. The incongruous marks on the base are all hand-incised, with "84" normally being a purity mark; the origin of the hand-incised, 2-headed eagle looks to be Russian, and was likely added at a later date, for reasons unknown to us.

MEASUREMENTS: 5.25" (13.33 cm) tall to finial; 3" (7.62 cm) diameter rim; 2" (5.08 cm) diameter foot.

CONDITION: Excellent generally, with two issues: rim is slightly out of alignment, and needs minor repair by a professional to return to proper fit; the silver screw which holds the finial, has been stripped and needs minor repair. A few tiny nicks to rim and lid rim; very small dent to rim, probably the source of the ill-fit.
