Antique Austrian Porcelain Urns Josef Riedel Kauffmann
A pair of late 19th, early 20th Century porcelain urns, decorated in Austria by Josef Riedl (period of 1890-1918). While the paintings on these urns are signed "Kauffmann," alluding to Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), they are "after" this famous 18th Century Swiss artist, and were actually painted by, or under the direction of Josef Riedl. It is interesting to note that the Royal Porcelain Manufacturer of Vienna had many immitators who used similar identifying symbols, as the "beehive" on the base of these urns, as well as attributing their handpainting to Ms. Kauffmann. In reality, Ms. Kauffmann was not known to decorate porcelain at all, but painted in watercolor, oils, and pastels on paper and canvas, also murals and furniture. As a child prodigy, Ms. Kauffmann, herself, eventually copied the works of Correggio and Carracci as part of her own artistic training, before developing her own refined style, a style which has been imitated on many pieces of porcelain, and all long after her death. Still, the paintings on these urns are lovely works of art, even though the attribution signature is inaccurate. Against a deep teal ground, are two cartouche paintings on each urn, and much gold decoration over the entire surface of each urn. Gilt handles are in the shape of dolphins, a popular motif of the time. Measuring nearly 14" (35.56 cm) tall, and 3.75" (9.52 cm) diameter of the base; excellent condition with the exception that the lid and finial on the right have been restored (and could use some further restoration), and wear appropriate to age. c. 1890-1918. $45 US Shipping.
