| A rare offering....Chinese Pith Paintings, set of eight (8), handpainted, unframed, and in their own original, handmade box with a Glass lid covered on the sides with Chinese Silk. These beautiful, highly detailed miniature original paintings are on pith paper...pith is the spongy substance inside many plants...which the Chinese extracted and made into paper. These are very fragile and they should be matted and framed to be beautifully displayed. Age is difficult to determine, but these could have been imported to the U.S. as early as 1891, when it became a requirement that U.S. import items show country of origin in English; each of these is lightly stamped on the reverse with "Made in China." The year they were painted in China, however, cannot be known for sure. Size & condition varies; each painting is apx. 2.5" x 3.75" (6.35 x 9.52 cm), and the box is apx. 3.25" x 4.25" (8.25 x 10.79 cm). Each piece in the set can be matted, even though some edges may be broken off. Condition varies slightly, but is excellent overall. Background color was brightened in photos to show detail.
