Situated along a ridge of land between swampy forest and meandering bayous, the old Bayou Road in the heart of New Orleans served as one of the earliest trading and portage routes for native Americans and then, European settlers. The portage shaved days off of sailing the full length of the river to reach early New Orleans. Bayous served as roads, and the Bayou Road area of New Orleans became an early suburb past the city gates, offering Creoles and others a unique trading opportunity.
