Rare and highly collectible children's book by illustrator and sculptor, Leo Lionni. An Astor Book, published in 1959 by McDowell, Oblensky, New York, this first edition is in good condition with only small tears on the dustjacket (pictured.) Lionni was born in Amsterdam in 1910 and came to the US in 1939. He had a one-man show at the Worcester Art Museum and served as Art Director for Fortune Magazine. This appears to be a second edition. A lovely little book with illustrated green cloth boards stamped in gilt.Very slight fading on the spine. Black and white illustrations/plates.Pages are tight though they have yellowed. Very faint stains on the last three pages. 171pgs.
