This is a very special, formal, antique Japanese kimono made for a young girl. It was made of a fine satin silk, and dyed a wonderful periwinkle blue ground color (the same blue as that used for Edo kosode; obtained from a natural dye). The butterfly and phoenix design (w/a tatewaku opposing line motif) was done with the rice paste resist yuzen technique, executed in a somewhat folk-art like manner (as in tsutsugaki rice past resist). This is a rare, antique saffron-colored, sleeveless Mongolian robe. It is made of a patterned silk, with various auspicious Buddhist motifs that are brocade-woven in metallic (silver?) threads.
