This antique Japanese paper stencil (Stencil C) has a wonderful scattered design of a blooming plant (lotus root? grass?). It is made of several layers of laminated handmade Japanese paper (made with "kozo," the inner bark of the mulberry bush) then treated with persimmon paste, and finally smoked to render it waterproof and tough. The intricate design (which is "chu-mon" or medium-size) is cut into the paper by a master cutter-artisan. ...click for details

This is an antique Japanese porcelain plate with a hanabishi (flower-lozenge)shape and a scalloped-rim. It has the characteristic green/black “fuku” stamp (on the bottom), which was used at the Kutani kilns in the 18th and 19th centuries. As well, it has Kutani’s distinctive Persian blue-green, yellow, cobalt blue, eggplant purple, and benibana-red underglazes on a milky white porcelain clay body.
