This cup, originally made for Japanese noodle soup (soba) sauce, is called "soba choko. Makes a lovely tea cup. The design, in cobalt blue underglaze ("sometsuke"), is skillfully handpainted on a lovely pearly white porcelain body. The inside rim is also decorated (with an abstract crosshatch line design). Slightly raised on a delicate foot; the lip is gently scalloped.

It is made of several layers of laminated handmade kozo (mulberry) paper (very strong!), then treated with persimmon paste, and finally smoked to render it waterproof and tough. Then the intricate design is cut into the paper by a master cutter-artisan.

This "kuro-satsuma" (black Satsuma) wide-mouthed jar is characteristic of those made in Naeshirogawa, a pottery town located in southeastern Kyushu. Satsuma's pottery tradition began in the 16th century, and several distinctive kiln styles have developed over the centuries.

This woman's kimono has a kasuri tie-dyed design of squares and circles. It is made of a nubby handspun, natural/plant-dyed raw silk (tsumugi); done in the Murayama Oshima tsumugi style. The sleeves are elegantly long (25.5 inches!). The lining is made of an undyed, nubby handspun silk (upper) and a crepe silk (lower) that was recycled from a tomesode kimono--the black ground dye and colored yuzen-dyed areas have been bleached, leaving a pinkish color. This is an unlined kimono (hitoe) with a bold design of Japanese "tsuzumi" hand-drums--the type used in Noh theater (held on shoulder and struck with hand). The drums are woven in. The silk of this kimono is a type of strong crepe (omeshi?). The white design on an indigo blue ground recalls Japanese "mingei" textiles. Lined in cotton (white) and silk (grey). This is a lovely young woman’s lavender-colored formal, long-sleeved kimono (furisode in Japanese) made of very fine silk crepe (chirimen). It is decorated with a motif of hexagonal-shaped shell game boxes (kaioke in Japanese) which are associated with Japan’s imperial Heian court (8th-11th century).
