This bamboo basket, for ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), was made with alternating wide and narrow pieces of split bamboo which were diagonally woven into a tapered cylindrical shape. The rim is done in a lacy eyelet fashion--visually quite striking. The basket has 3 legs, but only 1 extends out from the bottom of the basket. This four-legged basket is made of intricately woven pieces of split bamboo. The rough, asymmetrical shape of the handle is wonderfully juxtaposed against the basket's refined body. It has a warm reddish patina. In excellent condition. One of the thin strips of bamboo around the handle is coming loose, but the handle is attached with nails. Wisteria blossoms hang from the shoulders, and cherry blossoms are scattered here and there. The design composition is positioned across the 4 panels of the kimono--right front panel, 2 back panels, left front panel--giving it a three-dimensional feel, especially when wrapped around the wearer. This is a fantastic, twisted gourd-shaped basket, made of intricately woven strips of bamboo (2 types). Strips of yellow-black striped bamboo are used decoratively, while a reddish-brown stained bamboo is used for the basket frame. The basket comfortably rests in a frame made of old gnarly tree roots (from the camellia bush?). This style of basket was popular in the Meiji and early Taisho periods (1900s-20s). It was made to be used for Japanese flower arrangement (ikebana). ...click for details
