This is a very charming contemporary Japanese porcelain plate, made as a decorative item for display. It was made in one of the Kutani kilns, as indicated by the inscription on the box (read below). It has a matt brown glaze on the top surface, with nine white circles--eight smaller circles around one larger circle in the middle. This is a fabulous, large Japanese porcelain cobalt blue and white flower vase (hana-ike) done in the shape of a gourd. It was made at one of the Kiyomizu kilns in Kyoto, Japan. This style of blue and white porcelain--sometimes with a bit of iron oxide (red) overglaze accents here and there--is called "shonzui," taken from the name of the person attributed to having started this particular tradition in Japan in the 16th century. This is a large porcelain vase made in one of the kutani kilns. The hydrangeas were done in polychrome underglazes, as was the spotted yellow ground (a classic kutani characteristic). Dates from the first half of the 20th century. Comes with box, which is signed: kabin (flower vase); Yukisou-zou (or Setsushou-zou (made by Yukisou/Setsusou). Also has "fuku" mark on bottom of pot. This sweet Japanese porcelain art-deco style vase has fantastic, square-shaped flowers attached to its face. Pastel colored glazes are wonderful. There is a Chikuma mark on bottom, dating it to around 1930.

This large, cylindrical-shaped, green celadon porcelain vase has a raised design and is characteristic of those made in one of the Imari kilns in the early 20th century. It has a design of plum blossoms (raised) painted onto the celadon ground with a thick white glaze. The plum tree trunk and branches (not raised) are done in a rich cobalt blue glaze. Very finely made, with good "ring" when tapped.
This is a lovely large Arita porcelain bowl decorated with a cobalt blue and white "sometsuke" glaze. It has a Chinese-style landscape painting on the inside surface. Besides being skillfully executed, the painting is quite remarkable when you consider that it was done on a concave surface! It is signed on the underside (Kin/Tsukushimu).
