This is a very charming contemporary Japanese porcelain plate, made as a decorative item for display. It was made in one of the Kutani kilns, as indicated by the inscription on the box (read below). It has a matt brown glaze on the top surface, with nine white circles--eight smaller circles around one larger circle in the middle. This large bamboo basket from Japan is made with an open weave, giving it a light, airy look. But, in fact, it is very sturdy. It is assymetrical, yet perfectly balanced. It has a warm, chocolate brown patina. Dates from the first half of the 20th century. Signed: Shouzan (or Shoushou) saku (made by Shouzan). In excellent condition. No breakage at all.

This is a poster from the exhibition "Bernard Leech: The 100th Birthday Anniversary Exhibition", held in 1987 at the Nihon Mingeikan (Japan Folk Crafts Museum) in Osaka. It shows a close-up of one of Leech's plates in their collection. Comes unframed, and rolled in tube. Measurements Length: 28.5 in. (72.4 cm) Width: 20 in. (50.3 cm) In excellent-good condition. This charming vest is made of three different pieces of cotton--plain indigo-dyed solid blue cotton, an indigo-dyed, white-on-blue kasuri tie-dyed cotton, and an indigo white-and-red on blue kasuri tie-dyed cotton. Pieced together and then quilted (sashiko). It has undyed white cotton ties.

This is a futon cover (futon-ji) made of hand-spun cotton, with a hand tie-dyed ikat (kasuri) motif of a vase, tray, and blooming plum branch (all done in weft kasuri technique), and large crosses (double warp and weft kasuri). It comes from one of two towns which specialized in this style of kasuri--Kurume or Hirose--both located on the Japan Sea coast.

This kimono is made of a special type of silk called "kihachijo" --the "ki" means yellow, and hachijo (-jima) refers to the island in which this specialized silk fabric is made. Hachijo-jima is a small island 290 kilometers from Tokyo, out in the Pacific (part of Izu island chain). For approx. 800 years, the residents of this island have been producing silk (since the Heian period!).
