This man's kimono jacket (haori) has on its lining a handpainted ink wash (sumi-e) painting of Hotei, characteristically depicted as a pot-bellied, eccentric, Zen monk dressed in a tattered robe. Hotei is believed to be the historical 6th-century Chinese itinerant monk, Pu Tai Ho Shang.
