This small antique “old Imari” (ko imari) dish was made for the Japanese domestic market, not for export, and reflects Japanese taste. This man's kimono jacket (haori) has on its lining a handpainted ink wash (sumi-e) painting of Hotei, characteristically depicted as a pot-bellied, eccentric, Zen monk dressed in a tattered robe. Hotei is believed to be the historical 6th-century Chinese itinerant monk, Pu Tai Ho Shang. In Japan, Hotei is revered as a Zen patron saint--in spite of having neither property, home, or family, he is always cheerful and helps others wherever he goes.
