This is a sublime young woman’s formal, long-sleeved kimono (furisode in Japanese) made of fine silk crepe (chirimen). It has a soft red silk lining and 5 family crests (paulownia). The motif-–bridge, sandy shoreline along stream, cherry blossoms, and pine-–was elaborately handpainted with the rice-paste resist technique (yuzen), and stencil-printed with the kata-yuzen technique. All is generously embellished with silk and gold couched embroidery, and gold and silver leaf gilding (real gold and silver!). It dates from the Taisho period (1912-1926), and is clean and in excellent condition. Only a small section of the lining seams, along the front lapel and the bottom hem of the sleeve, are coming loose. The motif on this kimono, nearly identical to a 1700s kimono in a famous collection in Japan (Nomura Coll.), is said to represent the Chinese legendary Mt. Horai, the sacred mountain-island where the Immortals dwell. Measurements THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE. PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS |
