This small antique “old Imari” (ko imari) dish was made for the Japanese domestic market, not for export, and reflects Japanese taste. It would have been used in formal "kaiseki" cuisine, for a small individual serving of pickles, beans, vegetables, etc. It is decorated with a cobalt blue underglaze, and red, green, yellow, and gold overglazes. The special gold-over-red glazing technique used on this plate is called “kinran-de” (gold brocade). The inside of the softly scalloped rim is delicately outlined in cobalt blue (underglaze). It has a decorative inscription written in Chinese characters on its underside: "dai min nen sei,” meaning, roughly, “made in the bright year.” It also has a cobalt blue underglaze tendril scroll motif on the underside. It dates from the 19th century (over 100 years old). In excellent-good condition. No chips nor cracks. Only very slight surface wear. Measurements Serve your favorite chocolate dessert truffles to dinner guests on this beautiful Japanese dish. PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS |
