This bamboo basket is made with a special small species of bamboo that has a natural stripe pattern on its surface. The bamboo was split to take full advantage of this natural pattern. After it is harvested and as the bamboo strips mature, the stripes become more prominent. Several weaving techniques are used on this basket: the upper one-third section has a crepe-like texture created by twisting and alternating the pieces of bamboo. The lower two-thirds is done with a one-over, four-under twill weave. The rim is braided. The bottom is done with a chrysanthemum-like weave. The handle has strips of bamboo that wrap around a bamboo core (handle starts with 2 sections that are wrapped together to form one piece). This basket is signed: SuiShou. Dates from the late 19th-early 20th century. It has a lovely warm patina, acquired naturally over the years. In excellent-good condition. Only slight weak points, but no breakage.
