This is a supreme Taisho-style (1920s-1930s) long-sleeved kimono (furisode) and underkimono (sewn together). It has a motif of traditional Japanese boats in an iris pond--very Rimpa School. Wisteria blossoms hang from the shoulders, and cherry blossoms are scattered here and there. The design composition is positioned across the 4 panels of the kimono--right front panel, 2 back panels, left front panel--giving it a three-dimensional feel, especially when wrapped around the wearer. Silk thread embroidery and couched gold thread and gold paint have been applied generously throughout. The design--skillfully and artistically done (see pics)--is handpainted with dyes in the yuzen technique: The design is first drawn with rice paste, then dyed inside and around the rice paste areas. After it is steamed, the rice paste is washed off, leaving thin white outlines around the motif. It also has a stencil-printed shibori pattern (see pic of boat). Made of a heavy silk crepe (beige ground color). Condition: It has several small stains visible in the beige ground areas. As well, the couched gold thread is detached in many areas. A needle, silk thread, and a little loving care and patience can fix this. It has been specially priced considering its condition. Dates from the 1920s-30s. Measurements It has 5 family crests, indicating that it was made to be worn on a very special occasion--a wedding perhaps? Kimono of this quality seldom come on the market these days. For the serious collector willing to invest in its future. |
