This girl's formal five-crested silk kimono is made of a soft silk satin. The design of fans and plum blossoms was artistically handpainted in the rice paste-resist "yuzen" technique. Flecks of gold leaf are scattered here and there among the fans and flowers. Each fan has a different motif--bamboo, plum, snow lozenge, etc. The front ties are also decorated with an embroidered fan design. The silk was dyed blue on a white-beige silk ground; the "bokashi" shading method was skillfully applied to the areas where the blue blends into the beige. It is slightly padded (to add warmth); it also has a rolled, padded hem. The lower 1/2 of the inside section of the kimono is also handpainted with fans and plum blossoms. I believe natural dyes were used throughout. The lining is a soft, natural-dyed, handspun red "momi" silk. When worn by the young girl, it would have been pulled up (and folded/tucked under obi) some 10 inches or so, putting all the fans--on the sleeves and body of kimono--at the same level. How wonderful she must have looked! It has 5 crests: Yukimi ni hanabishi (flower lozenge in a snow roundel). In excellent condition, which is extraordinary, considering its age (100 years old) and the fact that this was a child's kimono. Only very slight discoloration can be seen in the beige areas. VERY slight. Measurememts This kimono dates from the 1900s-1910s. PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS |
