This is a very charming contemporary Japanese porcelain plate, made as a decorative item for display. It was made in one of the Kutani kilns, as indicated by the inscription on the box (read below). It has a matt brown glaze on the top surface, with nine white circles--eight smaller circles around one larger circle in the middle. Each of the circles has a wild plant/herb, handpainted in the characteristic Kutani polychrome glaze style--blue, purple, red, and yellow. The plant in the middle circle is dokudami (sorry, don't know English name), an indigenous plant with medicinal qualities; the leaves are often dried and used for tea in Japan. There are five plants total (four are repeated). The backside of the plate has a shiny black glaze. The foot area is unglazed, revealing a fine white porcelain clay body. The rim of the plate is glazed with the same black glaze as the back (continues up and over rim slightly). This plate is signed on the back (see pic) and it has an inscribed/signed box. The artist's family name is Matsumoto. Given name is Sekizan/Tetsuzan (male). The back of the plate is signed Sekizan/Tetsuzan (see pic). The yellow wrapping cloth (inside box) is also stamped. The kiln stamp says, Tou-katsu-dou. Box also says, Marumon and Ou-zara (large plate w/circle design). Measurements: 14.5 in. (36.8 cm) wide (diameter); 3 in. (7.6 cm) high. In excellent condition. No chips, cracks, or other damage. Likely 25-35 years old. The design is very striking, and it is well made throughout. A wonderful decorative (and collectible) piece. Please note: There is a highly acclaimed contemporary Kutani potter who also signs his pieces "Sekizan," and also has a Matsumoto family name. But the kanji character he uses for "seki" (in Sekizan) is different from this artist. Just the same, there is most likely some association between the two potters, suggesting that this artist is also a highly regarded Kutani potter of today. THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE.
