This is a fabulous, large Japanese porcelain cobalt blue and white flower vase (hana-ike) done in the shape of a gourd. It was made at one of the Kiyomizu kilns in Kyoto, Japan. This style of blue and white porcelain--sometimes with a bit of iron oxide (red) overglaze accents here and there--is called "shonzui," taken from the name of the person attributed to having started this particular tradition in Japan in the 16th century. The fine porcelaiin body is a snow white. The upper half of the pot has six circles; inside three of these is a handpainted landscape design. The other three have abstracted diaper designs (such as the key fret). On one side of the lower half of the pot, there is an old knarly pine tree. The other side has a knarly blooming plum tree. All is wonderfully handpainted by a highly skilled hand. This pot is signed on the bottom: Heian Zuishun, who is a highly regarded 20th century Kiyomizu artist working in the traditional Shonzui (blue-white pattern) style. The box is inscribed (from top right to bottom left): Kiyomizu-yaki (seal); Shonzui; Hisago-gata (gourd-shaped); Hana-ike (flower container/vase); Heian Zuishun-saku (made by heian Zuishun); Zuishun (signed again); Kyoto. Measurements: 12 in. (30.5 cm) high; 8.5 in. (21.6 cm) wide In excellent condition. No chips, cracks, or other damage. Likely dates from the early-mid-20th century (approx. 50-80 years old).
