This antique Japanese paper stencil (Stencil M) has a wonderful design of scattered flowers. It is made of several layers of laminated handmade Japanese paper (made with "kozo," the inner bark of the mulberry bush) then treated with persimmon paste, and finally smoked to render it waterproof and tough. The intricate design (which is "chu-mon" or medium-size) is cut into the paper by a master cutter-artisan. This stencil was used for traditional Japanese rice paste-resist stencil dyeing (katazome) for silk kimono and/or other textiles (floor pillows, etc.). This stencil is more than 100 years old (mid-late 1800s). Considering its age, and the fact that it was used, it is in excellent condition. Measurements (approximate): 10 in. (25.4 cm) wide; 16.5 in. (41.9 cm) long. This is one of a collection of very special antique Japanese textile stencils being offered by Benibana. THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE (if listed, it's available). PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS |
