Depicting the Cecilia Metella's tomb round ruin of far side of a river with an arch. 14 cm. x 9 cm., later mounted within a gilt wood moulded frame.
Footnote:
The first-century BC Tomb of Cecilia Metella is named after the fourth wife of the dictator, Lucius Cornelius Sulla (r. 82-79 BC). Located on the Appian Way, it is one of the most loved of Roman monuments, and serves as a resting place for travellers, artist and scholars. At one time, it is believed to have contained treasures and works of art, along with the white marble sarchofagus of its namesake.
