The Greek colonies of southern Italy (known in antiquity as Magna Grecia) were marked by their initial allegiance to the ceramic styles of the Attic mainland. However, over the years, native traditions and innovations heavily influenced the works of Magna Grecian potters. Unorthodox forms and painting-styles were seamlessly merged with the standard Greek style, creating distinctive works of art unique to the Hellenistic world. This gorgeous red-figure Lekanis comes from the Faliscan region of central Italy, to the northwest of Rome. Neighbors of the Etruscans, today the Faliscan people are best remembered for their language, which was believed to be very similar to Latin. So similar, in fact, that scholars believed the language was displaced by Latin in the years after Falerii, the Faliscan capital, was conquered by the Romans in 241 B.C. Faliscan pottery, as revealed by this red-figured stamnos, was highly influenced by the vessels created by their Greek neighbors to the south .

This Charming vase is an example of a lekanis (plural lekanides). The lekanis consists of two parts: a shallow lid with a large, flat knob which was often turned over and used as a plate, coupled with a small shallow bowl, two ribbon-like horizontal handles, a low footed base, and a rim with a ledge to receive the lid .

Use .

A lidded lekanis was generally used as a cosmetic container or as a gift for brides, which was given by their fathers on their wedding day and filled with trinkets.(2) The lekanis is a slightly deeper, lidded version of the lekane, which was usually used as a footbath in ancient Greece, and as a cooking vessel. Lekanides are also similar in function to the pyxis, which was also used for cosmetics and small items of adornment. As one can see by the spectrum of use for the lekanis, this vessel was a highly varied and widely used vessel throughout the Archaic age, only losing popularity much later after the end of the red figure Kerch style
