39 cm tall, 32 cm diameter. Good condition with a large chip at mouth, common to old tsubo. Dating to the beginning of th Edo Era, early 17c. This marvelous and simple four eared (looped) storage jar would have been used for grain or tea storage. The piece shows a variety of firing effects of the natural ash glazing. 7.25" x 6" x 1.25". Very good condition with a miniscule fleck repair on branch end on bottom, and some glaze wear on interior from use. Stamped with the characters "Kairakuen sei". Dating to the first half of the 19th century, the late Edo era. Kairakuen was a Daimyo sponsored private kiln (oniwa-yaki), set up on the castle grounds at Kishu, Wakayama prefecture around 1827; the kiln operated only for a brief period until 1844. A Mushiage Pottery double gourd form vase, finely potted, with applied multi color glazing and unglazed base, impressed with potters mark "mushiage". Mushiage was a kiln in Bizen province, established by Igi Sanyensai in 1830, with the guidance of the Kyoto potter Makuzu; the kiln made pieces primarily for tea ceremony, and were sometimes given the additional mark of Makuzu. 7.75" x 6", 19.6 x 15.2 cm, excellent condition.

10.8"/27.5 cm. high, excellent condition, one minor shallow chip on base from unglazed portion, not visible in place. Tokkuri--bottles for sake--were made throughout Japan and produced in massive quantities during the Edo era. This example dates from the late Edo to early Meiji eras, and originates from the Shigaraki kilns, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan. 4.25" high x 5.5" diameter. Very good condition, a light body hairline. Scuffs at top rim appear to have been in the making. Dating to the Late Edo, early Meiji Eras, roughly 1830-70. Morse lists a tokkuri (sake bottle) in his turn of the century "Japanese Pottery" showing the same slip treatment, as does Daniel Rhodes in his book "Tamba Pottery". Ceramics have been produced in the ancient method since Medieval times at Tamba (near Kyoto) first with natural and later with applied glazes. Late Edo or Early Meiji era, probably Kasamayaki. Largest 6" diam (not including spout) x 3" high med 4.9" x 2.25" small 4" x 2" Excellent condition; a miniscule chip on the bottom of the medium spout, and kiln spur breaks on bottom of smallest bowl.
